A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND COVID-19

It is no secret that a third world country such as the Philippines has its struggles within its healthcare system and more so with the current circumstances.

Through the months, COVID-19 has challenged the system of healthcare with cases rising from several areas within the nation and hospitals are overwhelmed. Frontliners are at risk each day they go to work and this is proven by several existing reports and articles, one of which is a work of JC Gotinga who stated

“As of May 25, there were 1,226 active COVID-19 cases among healthcare workers. Of these, 936 have mild cases of the disease, 288 are asymptomatic, and two have severe infections.” (Gotinga, 2020).

The matter at hand

Not only are hospitals struggling to keep up with the situation, but the workers are having to suffer as well. With this, it is imperative that we take it upon ourselves to donate to nearby hospitals to help improve services and means of protection.

One may be tempted to say that other countries are experiencing the same level of hardships as well but that is one argument this blog's point can greatly be proven on. As opposed to first world countries, the Philippines evidently lacks the proper funding for not only the healthcare system but for other areas as well, although that is a matter for another time. What should have been addressed long ago is now taking its toll on the nation’s capacity in terms of COVID-19 patients and laboratories are finding it hard to meet the requirements of DOH. Despite the fact that the government is currently working on these, resulting in them slowly progressing to betterment, if there had been sufficient financing to back hospitals earlier on, the nation would be in a better position in the matter of cases. In fact, as of April 2020, according to data from the John Hopkins University dashboard, the Philippines was ranked first in ASEAN countries with the most COVID-19 cases, surpassing Malaysia’s count by more than 200.

So, what can you do?

The most an average citizen can do is to donate to nearby organizations and abide by the “social-distancing” rule. You can also use your platforms wisely and speak up about the matter to initiate a sense of responsibility within your community. Also, don't forget to wash your hands and keep yourself nourished with the proper vitamins and nutrients.
