It’s during these times of a global pandemic that you may start to wonder: How can I protect myself? You see, your immune system may only be able to work to an extent. But do not fret, there are ways to strengthen it. Some may think of it as a challenge, but here are a few easy ways that you can incorporate into your daily life.

AVOID STRESS

Your immune system is affected by both your physical and mental health so stress CAN be a contributor to a weakening system. Resting from time to time will help you avoid it. Even a quick 5 minute nap between doing work will do. The mind has more power over your body than you think so any exposure to long-term, excessive stress may be harmful. In fact, a stressed person is more likely to catch a cold! And it all spirals back to its effect on the immune system.

Tips:

  • Manage your time.

No, you don’t need a physical or digital journal. Yes, you can plan out your days mentally. Managing your time is all about knowing what should be prioritized which means that even if you don’t write down your schedule, you’ll remember. Also, don’t force an extra activity into a full day. You know what you can and can’t do.

  • Don’t rush into activities!

Whether you’re studying for a test or preparing for a meeting, there is no need to rush things. Quality over quantity. Not only will moderately taking your time improve the quality of your work, you’ll be relaxed too. But don’t take too long! Doing things step by step is different from procrastinating.

MOVE SOMEHOW!

Being active in any way is extremely important, especially during quarantine when you're in the comforts of your home all day, everyday. Do you need to do a thousand calorie burning exercise? No! Not at all. Although it is highly suggested that you take a walk everyday or every other day. Your heart is the center of all your systems—including your immune system—and distributes blood to help the entirety of your body function. That being said, the heart is also like your muscles and strengthens with more physical activity.

Tips

  • Take a quick 15-30 minute walk/run around your neighborhood.

(Please remain at least six feet away from anyone else and stay near your own house) or on the treadmill every so often. For those who easily get tired, walking at even a slow pace is fine.

  • Search online for quick workouts or yoga routines.

These days, there are several sources of free programs, easy and hard. Your options range from simple exercises to intense workouts.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

Why are vitamins important you ask? Well, they boost your immune system like none other. Common immunity boosters are Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin B6. All these cause unique, specific reactions therefore taking a wider variety of vitamins is key.
